The launch of Ireland’s Global Citizens 2030 strategy marks a major advancement in international education. The initiative was introduced at the start of 2024 to promote the country’s role as a global education hub while addressing the needs of its citizens, delegates learned at the annual BUILA conference 2024.
Ireland’s leader, the Taoiseach, has spearheaded a comprehensive effort involving various government officials to present a unified approach to international education. Ian McKenna, a member of Ireland’s international cooperation unit at the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science elaborated on this coordinated effort. “The advantage of a centrally driven global brand is that all government departments play a part,” he said last 10 July. He further explained that this structure allows Ireland to address policies by engaging with government departments like the Department of Justice.
Ireland’s smaller-sized and centralised government provides a unique edge in advancing international education. McKenna emphasised that the Global Citizens 2030 strategy is set to establish Ireland as a leading centre for education, research and policy on a global scale.
McKenna outlined the core objective of the strategy which is designed to prepare Irish students for multicultural and multinational work environments. This preparation involves both sending students abroad and welcoming international students to Irish campuses. He highlighted the importance of nurturing diversity within Irish universities, remarking that the diversity within campuses and the environment where students learn is seen as absolutely critical. This diversity not only enhances the educational experience but also equips students with the skills needed to thrive globally.
However, McKenna acknowledged the challenges associated with attracting international talent. He stressed the need for substantial investment in infrastructure to support this initiative. “We have to make sure that that can be accommodated,” he stated. Ensuring adequate housing and accommodation for international students, as well as streamlined visa arrangements, are vital infrastructure considerations for the successful execution of the strategy.
